Dear Parents,
Wow! The last day of school is Friday. I know your child is ready for the summer to begin. I wonder of you parents are ready.
On Tuesday, May 24th at 7:00 p.m. is the Eighth Grade Graduation. If you have the time you should try to attend. It is a wonderful ceremony. Bring some kleenex, you might shed a tear or two.
On Tuesday, May 24th the Second Graders are having a FREE Pizza Lunch provided by Mr. Somers. Second Grade came in 3rd place in the cartridge recycling. This is the first time this has ever happened to Second Grade.
On Thursday, May 26, lunch will be provided for the whole school. Hot dogs and hamburgers will be served. This lunch is provided by the Brockman Family. Thursday is Field Day and is also Free dress.
The last day of school is Friday, May 27. Mass will begin at 8:30 a.m. Dismissal will be at 10:00 a.m.

Dear Parents,
I hope all the Mom's are having a relaxing Mother's Day.
The First Communion Mass was nice. The Second Graders looked so nice. Remember, on Monday, May 9 at 8:15 a.m. the Second Graders will be celebrating with a Mass at OLM School. Have your child come to school in their First Communion outfit then after the mass they will change into their OLM uniform.
We will have 20 Spelling Words this week and we will finish up Muggie Maggie.
Relay For Life Saturday,May 14, 9:00 a.m. and will finish Sunday,May 15, 9:00 a.m. Come out and walk for 1 or 2 hours or work at the OLM Booth. Please try to attend this wonderful cause.

Dear Parents,
I hope everyone had a wonderful Easter vacation. I know I did. I went to a Giants ballgame with my 3 children and my 3 grand children. I spent a couple of days in the mountains and did lots of yard work around my house. Can you believe it, next Saturday is First Holy Communion then the end of the school year will be here. Where has the year gone?
There are no Spelling Words this week. There is a Chapter 9 Math test on Thursday.
The rehearsal at St. Patrick's Church is Thursday. Remember to take your child to St. Pat's on Thursday morning and not to school. Please remember to send in your child's Permission slip before Thursday so that we have your permission to transport your child to school by private car.
The Banners are due on Wednesday, May 4th.

Dear Parents, The story for the week is Curve in the River. There will be 20 Spelling Words this week. There will be 20 Spelling Words until the end of the school year. Remember the Follies this coming weekend, April 15, 16. Some of us teachers and staff have been working hard on a tap dancing routine. If you parents have any empty one-half gallon milk or juice cartons I would appreciate it if you send them to school with your child. We will be making Easter baskets with them. Thank you. On Friday, April 15 the Second Graders will be making bread. We have talked in Religion that Jesus is our Bread of Life. Jesus himself must have thought bread was something special when he taught us to pray the Our Father, "Give us this day our daily bread." Any questions or concerns please contact me.

Dear Parents, The story for the week is Llama and the Great Flood. The Second Graders will be presenting the Stations of the Cross on Friday, April 8 after morning flag salute. If you can make it we would really appreciate it. There will be a meeting with Fr. Pat sometime before Easter vacation. He will go over the importance of First Holy Communion. The parents of children who will be receiving their First Holy Communion are asked to attend. I will send a note home letting you know when the meeting will be. Dear Parents, The story for the week is The Sun, Wind, and Rain. So, Monday's homework is to read the story and write the Vocabulary definitions. Friday, April 1, is an all school Mass. Dear Parents,
Welcome to the 4th Quarter of the school year. WOW! Where has the year gone.
We'll continue reading The Boxcar Children and finish up by Thursday. Remember Thursday, March 17 is FREE dress, wear your GREEN. It is also a half day of school, dismissal is 12:30 and NO SCHOOL on Friday, March 18th. Report Cards go home on Thursday.
Conferences will begin on Tuesday, March 22 and will finish up on Friday March 25. Dismissal for Tuesday through Friday is 12:30. The Library is having a Book Fair during Conference week. Lots of good books. The 8th Graders are having their Dinner Show on March 24. Always a good performance by the 8th Graders and the food is always delicious.

Dear Parents,
We will be reading a chapter for the next two weeks. The book is The Boxcar Children. There are no Vocabulary words for this week or next. Remember that March 17, school will be dismissed at 12:30 p.m. and there is no school on Friday, March 18th. Report Cards will go home on Thursday, March 17th. Conferences are March 22 through March 25. Dismissal will be at 12:30 p.m. on these days (March22 -28th). There is a Book Fair starting Monday, March 21 and will end on March 25th. Always a good selection of books to buy. I always find a few for myself and the grandkids.
The Second Graders will go to Cherish on Tuesday, March 8 to entertain the senior citizens. I have contacted the parents who volunteered to drive. I will see you Tuesday at OLM at 10:45 a.m. I appreciate you taking the time out of your day to drive the children. I know the senior citizens who have lunch at Cherish appreciate the children going there to sing.

Dear Parents,
The story for the week is Our Soccer League. The homework for Tuesday will be to read Our Soccer League, Small Reader and Vocabulary definitions. There will be a Chapter 7 Math test on Friday, February 25th. I will send some of the Math papers home on Tuesday so that your child can begin studying for the test.
On March 8 the Second Graders will go back to Cherish to entertain the Senior citizens who have lunch there. I will contact the parents who volunteered to drive to Cherish.
The OLM School Auction is Saturday night. Always a good time, with good friends, and lots of good food.
Starting next week I will send home a pamphlet, one per week for the next 8 weeks, regarding First Holy Communion. Read the pamphlets with your child as part of the preparation for First Holy Communion. First Holy Communion is approximately 8 weeks away. It is on May 7, 2011, at St. Patrick's Church.

Dear Parents,
Welcome to a full week of school. Remember NO SCHOOL on Monday, February 21. Valentine's Day on Monday. Remind your child to bring his/her Valentine's to school for the exchange and party in the afternoon. Also Free Dress on Monday, Red and White.
International Night is Wednesday, February 16th, 6:oo p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Come and enjoy the evening while learning about different countries and tasting some of food. It is always a fun evening.
February 26, 2011 is the annual OLM Auction. Mark your calendar. This is always a fun evening. I like the Silent Auction and the dancing.
The story for the week is Best Friend's Club. Vocabulary definitions for homework on Monday.
As I was checking the Math homework for last week I noticed that some of the students had a lot of errors. Parents, please check your child's homework. The homework is assigned so that your child can practice on what he/she worked on in class. Also, it lets you know what your child is learning in Math. Thank you for your help.

Dear Parents,
Welcome to Catholic School's Week 2011. If you happen to be at the 5:00 p.m. Mass on Saturday, the OLM Choir did a wonderful job. It was a wonderful way to start off the Catholic School celebration for 2011. January 31, Tuesday is BUDDY DAY. The children will find out who their Buddy is on Monday. Tuesday is also Blue and White day. Have your child wear their school colors on this day. When buying something for their Buddy please don't spend more than $4.00 dollars on the gift. Some of the Second Graders will have two (2) buddies. There is not HOT LUNCH on Tuesday and Wednesday. Bring your lunch on both days.
There will be a Basketball game on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. Show your school spirit and come to the game.
On Friday, February 4, please drop off your child at St. Patrick's Church for the All School Mass. Several OLM children will be Baptized on this day. This is always a nice celebration and a wonderful way to end Catholic School's Week. Busy week, lots of activities.
We are not reading a story this week. We will be reading a chapter book, The Littles.

Dear Parents,
The story for the week is Angel Child, Dragon Child. The Spelling Test from last week will not
be recorded in the Grade Book. An error was made in the correcting. The word "tern" was marked wrong. I decided not to enter it into the Grade Book. Way back in August some of you signed up to drive for our community service. Second grade is scheduled to go to Cherish on February 8 and March 8. Please check your calendar if you volunteered to drive. I will remind you as the day gets closer. Starting January 30, 2011 is Catholic Schools Week. Lots of activities will be going on. The children really enjoy all the activities during this week especially Buddy Day. Catholic School's Week is a time of celebrating Catholic Schools where we grow closer to God, and come together as a family and pray everyday.

Dear Parents,
I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I had a wonderful Christmas visiting with my 3 children and playing with my grandchildren. Back to school on Monday, January 3, 2011. Report Cards go home on Friday, January 7th. We'll have our story for the week, "DEAR DADDY" ,which means Vocabulary words on Monday. Friday January 7th is an All School Mass and dismissal is at 12:30.
Please remind your children that we are starting the Third Quarter on Monday and that everyone starts off with an "A" in all subjects and it is up to them to keep those grades up. I always remind them at the beginning of the new Quarter and stress to them that they are the ones who determine what kind of grades they end up with.
REGARDING HOMEWORK: Please check your childs Homework. If there are any mistakes please have your child correct them. When the Big Reader and the Small Readers go home please have your child read out loud and sign the Reading Log for the Small Readers. Sometimes the Reading Log is not signed. The more reading your child does the better he/she will get.

Dear Parents,
Your child did an excellent job at the Penance service. I talked to Fr. Pat after the Prayer service and he said that the children knew what to say. They said the Act of Contrition without any hesitation. Good job.
We have completed the Level 6 Reader. We will begin reading in the the Level 7 Reader after Christmas break. We will be reading Flat Stanley Again this week. There will be a Chapter 5 test in Math on Thursday. I will be sending some Math paper home. Use these completed math papers as study sheets for the test.

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving Day. If you are like me I always eat way too much.
The Penance Service is on November 30, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. at St. Patrick's Church. I am sending a note home on Monday. First Penance is a big step in your child's Catholic faith. Your child already knows that family members are invited to attend their First Penance.
Please help me out in making sure that your child knows that it is okay to be a little nervous. I told the class that if they should forget any prayer while talking to the Priest he would help them out.

Dear Parents,
I hope you enjoyed the Thanksgiving Program. Lots of good singing and dancing.
Just a reminder. First Penance will be celebrated on Tuesday, November 30, 2010 beginning at 7:00 p.m. with a Prayer Service at St. Patrick's Church. Following the Prayer Service will be the confessions for your children. Please talk to your child about this. Tell him/her that it is okay to be a little nervous. We will be rehearsing during the week in the classroom.
The dress for this celebration is something nice, just like the Thanksgiving Program.
Parents, please talk to your children about how to treat each other. There have been some problems in the classroom and out in the playground. Children have been very unkind to each other. Shoving when they are lining up to come in. Name calling. In the classroom whenever someone is reading and makes a mistake there are a couple of children who think it is funny and start laughing. Please talk to your children about the importance of being kind to one another. Thank you.

Just a reminder, Second Grade will be performing in the Thanksgiving Program on Wednesday, November 10, 2010 at 6:30 p.m. at St. Patrick's Hall. Please have your child at the hall by 6:15 p.m. Have your child wear something nice. We will be singing two songs.
On Thursday, November 11, 2010, in honor of Veteran's Day OLM is having FREE DRESS. Please have your child wear Red, White and Blue.

The Halloween Carnival was fun. I saw a lot of you there. I hope you had a good time. I enjoyed meeting and talking to you all of you parents during Conference week. Back to our regular schedule.

Just a reminder that starting Monday, October 25th through Friday, October 29th there are conferences. Dismissal will be at 12:30 p.m. Conferences are 15 minutes long. Please try to be on time.

Thursday, I CAN, YOU CAN, WE CAN SAY NO TO DRUGS, students may bring canned or non-perishable food for the Catholic Charities Food Bank. IF YOU BRING FOOD, YOU MAY WEAR RED AND WHITE FREE DRESS TO SCHOOL TODAY. REMEMBER the colors are RED and WHITE. Friday, DRUGS ARE SCARY, students may wear Halloween costumes to school.

Dear Parents,
I hoped you enjoyed the First Holy Communion celebration. Your child did a wonderful job. I have received nothing but good compliments on how respectful the children were. I was stressed on the Monday before First Communion. As the week progressed the stress was slowly going away. Thank you parents for giving me the opportunity to prepare your child for their First Holy communion.
There will be a Chapter 9 test in Math on Thursday. Please help your child prepare for this test.
On May 11 we will be going to Cherish. I will be contacting you if you volunteered to drive.
Grandparents Day is May 7 with a Mass at 8:15 a.m. Any Grandparents interested in this day, please let the school office know. Dismissal will be at 12:30 p.m. The Talent show is on May 14. The lower grades will start performing at 8:30 a.m. The upper grades will begin at ll:00 a.m.

Dear Parents,
I hope everyone had a wonderful Easter. This coming week is going to be a very busy week for your child. We are going to practice, practice, practice for First Holy Communion. Just a reminder next Saturday, April 17, 2010 is the big day. It is normal for your child to feel nervous about First Communion. Let him or her know that you and the entire Church family are sharing this moment with him or her. Let your child know that receiving Communion is an important step to becoming closer to God.
Banners are due on Wednesday, April 14, 2010. I am sending a note home on Monday regarding the rehearsal at St. Patrick's on Friday, April 16, 2010. I need drivers to bring the students to school after the rehearsal. Let me know. Also, another note is going home on Thursday, April 15, 2010 regarding the Mass at school on Monday.

Dear Parents,
Conferences begin on Tuesday. Monday is a regular school day with dismissal at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday dismissal is at 12:30 p.m. On Tuesday, March 9 we will be entertaining the Senior citizens at Cherish. I have contacted several parents to drive the students. We will be going again in May.
The Spring Program is Wednesday, March 10th.

Dear Parents,
International Night was fun. It was good to see a lot of the parents there. I hope you enjoyed yourself. We have been talking in Religion about First Communion and the proper way to receive Jesus. Keep reminding your child that the Sacrament of Communion is an important part in their Catholic faith. Please explain that each time they receive Communion they grow closer to Jesus and with one another.
This Friday, February 26th there is a Chapter 7 Math test. Chapter 7 is on Time and Money. I will be sending home some math papers, just like I did for Chapter 6. Use the math papers as study sheets.
Conferences will be in 3 weeks. During Conference Week there will be a Book Fair at the library. Always lots of good books to purchase.
The Second Grade will be presenting the Stations of the Cross on March 12th. If you can make it we would like to see you there. We will be going back to Cherish on March 9th. I will be contacting parents again.
During this time of Lent I have been reminding the children that we need to be more like Jesus. Lent is not always about giving something up. Lent is also a time of doing good deeds, sharing, helping, forgiving, making peace, cooperating, and listening well. Lent is a growing season. Growing closer to Jesus.

Dear Parents,
Catholic Schools Week is over. It was a fun week. The Second Graders always enjoy Buddy Day. The Baptisms of the four Second Graders was nice. Fr.David did a wonderful job. Sorry to see him leave Merced. Valentine's Day will be celebrated on Thursday. A note will go home on Monday, February 8th. Also going home this week are First Communion pamphlets. These are like the First Penance pamphlets only for First Communion. First Communion will be celebrated on April 17th. On Tuesday evening is International Night. Come and enjoy a trip around the world.
The Second Graders are going to Cherish on Tuesday, February 9th. I have contacted some of you about driving the students to Cherish. Remember, Friday, February 12th, and Monday,February 15th there is NO SCHOOL.
Progress Reports go home on Thursday. Keep in mind that the grades on the Progress Report
are where your child is right now, Not The Final Grade For The Quarter. Remember, there is always room for improvement. Keep reminding your child to do his/her best.

Dear Parents,
Lots of things coming up. The Peru report is due on Monday, January 25th. I have already received a few reports from the students. They look good. International Night is on Tuesday, February 9th.
Mardi Gras Madness is on Saturday, January 30th at St. Patrick's Church Hall. Catholic Schools Week is starting on Sunday, January 31st. Be sure and attend one of Masses and have your child were his/her uniform to show the parishioners how proud you are of OLM School. Lots of activities are planned for Catholic Schools Week. Be sure and check the yellow paper that went home in the Family Envelope with the schedule of activities for the week. Friday is the Mass at St. Patrick's Church. Please drop your child off at the church by 7:50 a.m. A VIA bus has been provided by Mr. Pellicano so drivers are not needed. If you would like to ride the bus back to school from the church please let me know. I believe there are approximately 47 seats on the bus and 34 of those seats will be taken up by Second Graders.
When you see Mr. Pellicano thank him for the VIA bus.
A Permission slip to ride the bus will go home on Monday, January 25th. Please return the permission slip by Friday, January 29th.
NAMES ON PAPERS Several students keep forgetting to write their name on their papers. I have been taking 3 points off each time they forget to write their name. The students know this. Please remind them at home to write their name on homework assignments. I remind them everyday to write their name on their paper.

Dear Parents,
If any of you are intersted in either driving or helping out at school and have not had the Safety Environment Training, you are in luck, because there will be a training meeting on Wednesday, January 13, 2010 at 6:p.m. in the school auditorium.
No school on Monday, January 18th, Martin Luther King Day.
The Auction is on Saturday January 30th. This is always a fun evening.
International Night is February 9, 2010 in the school auditorium. The country we are learning about is Peru. Your child will bring home an index card with a topic written on it. I will explain to your child that he/she can have parents help them with their report. The report should be at least one page long. Please skip lines between sentences. The report needs to be in their own handwriting. If all you can find is one paragraph to write on that is okay. The report is due on January 25, 2010. Please be sure that your child uses his/her best handrwriting. If your child finds a picture to go along with the report please have them staple it to the report.
We are having a Math test on Chapter 6 on Friday, January 15th. I will be sending Math papers that will be stapled together for your child to use as study sheets for the test.

Dear Parents,
Happy New Year! Welcome to the 3rd Quarter of school. How time flies! I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas break. My vacation was nice. I spent some time with my 3 grandchildren.
We will begin Science this quarter. We will start with Living and Non Living things. We will learn about Peru. Peru is the country for International Night. Each student will write a one page report on a topic that will be assigned to them. More details will follow.
First Communion will be here soon. We will begin by learning about the different parts of the Mass.
Report Cards go home on Friday, January 8th. At the beginning of each quarter I give my speech to the students. "You begin each quarter with an "A" in every subject. It is up to you to keep those A's. You are the one who determines whether the grade goes down or stays an " A".

Thank you, thank you, thank you! The Santa hat covered with money was a huge surprise.

Dear Parents,
The Penance Prayer Service was nice. The students did a nice job. I talked to Fr. Pat later on and he said everyone did a good job. Thank you parents for sending your child to Our Lady of Mercy School.
I need to remind you, parents, to be sure and check your child's homework. I know sometimes things get busy at home but I have noticed that homework has been coming back to school with lots of errors on it. The Spelling homework has lots of errors. Especially when your child has to write their words 5 times each. The Math homework has errors. Your child has not completed all the steps in Regrouping thus ending up with the wrong answer. Please take the time to check your child's homework. Thank you for your help.
The Christmas Program is Wednesday December 9, at St. Patrick's Church at 6:30 pm. The 8th Grade class, 5th Grade class and 1st Grade class have been working hard on the program. The school band is also performing. If you have not had a chance to hear the band play now is your chance. They do a good job. Remind your child that Christmas is not always about receiving gifts but about the wonderful event of Jesus' birth. Help your child understand that everyday can be a "Christmas" if we invite Jesus to be born into our hearts. At morning prayer each class will present a part of the Jesse Tree. The Jesse Tree activity helps us to remember during Advent that each person's way of living adds something special to Jesus' coming.

Dear Parents,
It was good to see you at conference time. Several events are coming up. On Tuesday, November 10, 2009 at 8:30 a.m. there will be a Veterans program. Each class will be performing a song. If you can attend, it would be greatly appreciated. We want to show our appreciation for all the Veterans who served our country so that we could be free. On November 18, 2009 the Second Graders will be performing at St. Patrick's Parish Hall in the Thanksgiving Program. The program begins at 6:30 p.m. Have your child at the hall no later than 6:15 p.m. The dress for the program, is something nice. Remember the Parent's Club is having a Thanksgiving dinner the same night as the program. The dinner is always a very tasty one. Thanksgiving vacation is November 23 through the 27.
On Tuesday, December 1, 2009 the Second Graders will be receiving their First Penance. First Penance will be at St. Patrick's Church and will begin at 7:00 p.m. We have been discussing the Ten Commandments in class . We will also role play the proper way of going to confession. Role playing will ease some of the stress of going to confession.

Welcome to Red Ribbon Week. Lots of activities will be happening during the week.
Remember Friday , October 30th is the day that the students come to school in their costumes. A costume parade will take place in the morning (Friday). The carnival is on Saturday at the school. Come to the school and have a good time. The carnival is from 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.

We made it through all the ITBS Testing. I am sure your child is glad it is all over with. Maybe not, because they didn't have any homework. We're back to the routine of homework on Monday,Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.
Snack sale on Friday during recess. Also on Friday is the Mass for the Feast of St. Francis. Mass will begin at 11:00 a.m. and will be held outside. If you have a pet bring it to the Mass for a special blessing. Dismissal on Friday, October 2, is 12:30 p.m.

Dear Parents,
Starting Monday,September 21 and continuing through Thursday, September 24 is the ITBS testing. Your child will only be testing in the morning. We start at 8:30 a.m. and will finish at approximately 11:30 a.m. Between each test we take a break. We will do some dancing, exercising and stretching. Two tests will be given before recess and one after recess. There are no Spelling words this week and no story for the week which means no Vocabulary words this week.
We need to continue doing Math during the week, so there might be some Math homework this week.
Have your child get plenty of rest during week. Remember this test is not to determine the intelligence of your child but a tool for the teachers to get an idea of your child's needs throughout the year.

Dear Parents,
I was pleased to see so many of you at the Open House on Sunday, September 13. I hoped you enjoyed visiting your child's classroom.
On Tuesday, September 8th I sent home the Christian Behavior Rubric for Conduct. We talked about the different levels of behavior. We talked about what kind of behavior was expected of them if they wanted an A, B,C, or D grade in Conduct. I would appreciate it if you would go over the Rubric with your child. If you have already discussed it with your child, thank you for doing that.
Progress Reports go home on Friday, September 18th. The Progress Report is to give you an indication of your child's growing skills and maturity in his/her grade level and not their academic future. The report is a part of the communication between school and home in terms of their current progress. Try not to compare your child with their classmates. Many children and parents have been discouraged and hurt when comparing, forgetting that the progress of one child can in no way compare to the progress of another. Everyone is an individual and is evaluated as such.
Several of you mentioned at the Open House that your child really liked doing the First In Math
computer program. As a school we hope to see some progress in Math computations.

Dear Parents,
We are starting our Fourth week of school. Just a few reminders. SAFE ENVIRONMENT MEETING On September 22, and October 13 at 6:00 p.m. in the Audidtorium a Safe Environment Meeting will take place. If you are interested in driving for any Field Trips you need to attend. This also applies if you are going to volunteer in the classroom or help out with lunch Yard Duty. Remember, when you are working around children you need to be Finger Printed.
PLANNERS: At our Faculty meeting on Friday, September 4 a discussion of signing the Planners on Fridays was brought up. A few of us teachers were under the impression that if you did not assign homework on Friday the Planners did not have to be signed. Mrs. Blackburn wants the school to be uniform, so from now on the Planners need to be signed on Fridays.
MATH: A letter is going home on Tuesday regarding the First In Math computer accessed program. For some reason the Second Grade log on and password list was not sent. I received the list on Friday morning. The internet address is : www.firstinmath.com

Dear Parents,
Your child started Homework last Monday. Most of the children were okay with the homework. A couple of the children were a little overwhelmed by the work. Homework has a definite place in the educational process. It is an extension of the learning experience children have during the instructional day. Homework is designed to aid the students in achieving classroom and school goals.

When your child has homework please look it over with your child. Show genuine interest in the work. Instruct your child to complete homework as early in the afternoon or evening as possible. Insist that homework be done away from the television and other disstractions. Take an active interest in your child's schoolwork. Assist your child when he/she has trouble understanding something, try to help. Lastly, when your child brings home their Reader or Small Reader, read with your child. Discuss what your child has read.
All of the above suggestions are ways you can help to support your child's education at home.

On Monday, August 24, 2009 homework assignments will begin. Your child will have Reading, Spelling, and Vocabulary on Monday. There will also be some Math homework during the week. A letter is going home explaining the homework. Homework days are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. No homework on Friday. The weekend is for family. I will always explain the homework assignments to your child in class. Remember, homework assignments are used to reinforce classroom learning.

Dear Parents,
First of all I want to welcome you to an exciting year in Second Grade. Second Grade is a special year. Your child will be celebrating First Penance and First Holy Communion. Along with celebrating the Sacraments of Penance and Communion your child will be learning many new and exciting academic concepts.
Our Lady of Mercy School has been a part of my life for 30 years. I became a part of the O.L.M. School family when my daughter, Marsha entered preschool in 1979. I was a Mom helper in kindergarten with my sons, Mark in 1983, and Ryan in 1984. In 1985 I became a teacher aide in kindergarten and worked with Mrs. Tresidder for 13 years. I began teaching Second Grade in 2000 and have enjoyed every year.
The classroom environment I plan to maintain is positive and pleasant in which your child will be treated with fairness and respect. I expect your child to behave appropriately and to be self-disciplined, honest and to accept responsibility for his/her own behavior and to treat others with respect.
I expect your child to try their best, to use their time in the classroom productively, and to use school materials and property in a responsible way. I assure you that your child will clearly understand what is to be expected of him/her. Your child deserves the most positive educational climate possible for academic growth and I will work hard to be consistent in that capacity.

Dear Parents,
Welcome to our last month of school. My how time flies when you're having fun! this has been a busy year of school. Lots of things happened in Second Grade. First Penance and First Holy Communion were the big events of the year. Lots of new academic concepts were learned and we will continue to learn. On Monday, May 11, 2009,we will start working on our Times Tables.
Please work with your child at home and most importantly work on the Times Tables during the summer. I was talking with Mrs. Marasti regarding Times Tables and she told me that the students who worked on Times Tables during the Summer knew them going into 3rd Grade. These students were not having any trouble with Times Tables because they already knew them.
On Tuesday, May 12, 2009 we will be going to Cherish. We will entertain the Seniors who go there for lunch. On Wednesday, May 13, 2009 we will go on our Field Trip. We should return to OLM School in time for lunch. So if your child wants to have hot lunch he/she can sign up for it. In the afternoon I plan on having an ice cream treat.
We were scheduled to go to Day Out on May 26, 2009. Mrs. Mills volunteered to take her class on that day. So if you have it marked on your calendar to drive to Day Out you can make other plans. Thank you Mrs. Mills for volunteering to go to Day Out.

I hope everyone had a very Happy Easter. My Easter was very nice and my break was a very restful one. I hope you and your child have been working on your banner. Banners are due on Wednesday, April 22. If some of you are having problems with them let me know and so we can work something out. If for some reason they are not ready on Wednesday, please bring them in on Thursday. They need to be hung at St. Patrick's Church Friday morning.
I'm sending a note home on Monday regarding the rehearsal at St. Patrick's. At the bottom of the permission slip are places for you to sign up to volunteer. If you or a family member would like to volunteer please let me know. Your child has been preparing for this very important day and it is always good to see parents and family members involved in this celebration.

First of all thank you for attending the Follies this past weekend. The teachers had a lot of fun dancing on stage. I hope you enjoyed the show. First Communion is just around the corner. Dear Parents,
Quarter 3 of this school year has finished and now it is Quarter 4. Can you believe it! We have been working hard in the classroom for First Holy Communion. We have been going over the different parts of the Mass, the clothing that the Priest wears. Next we will be talking about the altar and the many different vessels the Priest uses to prepare the bread and wine for communion.
On Tuesday, March 10 we will go to Cherish to entertain the people who eat lunch there. Tuesday is also the day the Daughters of St. Paul have their Book Fair in the library.
The Spring Program is March 11 at 7:00 p.m. The Crab Feed is Friday, March 13 at St. Pat's Parish Hall.
During the week of March 16 through March 20 the Library will have a Book Fair.
Conference Week is March 17 through March 20. Dismissal will be at 12:30 for those 4 days.
The Second Graders will be in charge of the Stations of the Cross on Friday, March 20. Please try to attend. Everyone in the class will have a job. Some will be reading, some will be holding up a card with one of the stations on it.
On March 24th the Second Graders will be going to Day Out. Some of you volunteered to drive way back in August. I will be contacting you to find out if you are available on March 24.

Dear Parents,
I hope everyone enjoyed their week off. I know I did. After having a week off we will be in school for three and a half days this week. Half day of school on Thursday, February 26th, 12:30 dismissal. There is NO SCHOOL on Friday, February 27th. Enjoy your long weekend.
On March 10th the Second Graders will be going to Cherish and on March 24th we will be going to Day Out. Way back in August or September some of you signed up to drive. I will be contacting you to find out if you are still available to drive. On March 20th the Second Graders will be leading the Stations of the Cross at morning prayer. Please try to attend.
All school mass for Ash Wednesday, February 25th at 8:15 a.m is the beginning of Lent. Lent is about prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Prayer can be a spontaneous expression of thanksgiving to God for what we have or formal prayers such as Stations of the Cross. Fasting, can be denying ourselves of something such as candy, soda or T.V., or we can "fast" from bad habits like saying unkind things about others. Almsgiving, does not mean we have to open our wallets ,instead, a kind word, a compliment or a smile can be a rich expression of alms. Remind your child that Lent is an important part of the Catholic faith.

Dear Parents,
International Night was fun. It was good to see so many of you there. Your child liked learning about Morocco. I talked to several parents that night and they enjoyed learning about Morocco too. My daughter Marsha had a good time and she enjoyed sharing her experiences about Morocco with you.
Valentine's Day. Valentine's Day is almost here! A couple of students have asked about valentine exchange. In order to make the exchange work smoothly and easily, I would like you to have your child sign his or her name on each valentine, but do not write a name on the envelope. In this way, your child can pass out their valentines quickly, without fuss over which one belongs to whom. Candy attached to a valentine is fine, but please note that many children do send candy, and too much candy can cause an upset stomach.
The Valentine Party will be in the afternoon. I have mentioned to the room mom that I would like something simple. Not to many sweet things.
I want to take this opportunity to thank all the parents who drove students back from St. Patrick's Church to the school after our Catholic School's Week mass. The Mass was wonderful. I know your child enjoyed watching one of their classmates being baptized. Thank you for taking the time out of your day to help out.
Remember that there is no school next week, February 16 thru February 20.

Lots of activities this week. On Monday students write appreciation letter to parents. Basketball games after school. Game starts at 4:00 p.m. McSwain vs OLM. Try to attend. Show your support and have a snack while you cheer for OLM.
Tuesday, students perform service around the school. Song practice. After school Livingston comes to OLM for a basketball game. Game time 4:00 p.m. Go to the game and have a snack.
Wednesday is Cherish Luncheon. All students need to bring their lunch today.
NO HOT LUNCH TODAY. Weaver comes to OLM for a basketball game. Another game another snack and more fun cheering for OLM.
Thursday is BUDDY DAY/SPIRIT DAY/ Everyone wears Blue and White for Free Dress . Everyone needs to bring their lunch today. No hot lunch today. We are paired up with Mrs. Elam's 5th Grade class. Please remember to not spend too much for your child's buddy. Try to spend only $2.00 or so for a gift. We don't want any feelings hurt.
Friday - Mass at St. Patrick's Church. Your child needs to be dropped off before 8:00 a.m. Mass starts at 8:15 a.m. Please remind your child to be respectful when they enter the church.
At 1:30 p.m. the teachers play volleyball against the 8th graders. This is always a fun time.
On Saturday don't forget the OLM Auction.

Happy New Year. Can you believe we're starting our second half of the 2008-2009 school year. How time flies! International Night is on Thursday, February 5, 2009 in the school auditorium. The country I have chosen is Morocco. We started learning about Morocco. We completed a flag and have located Morocco on the continent of Africa. On Monday, January 12, 2009 your child will bring home an index card with a topic on Morocco . I have explained to your child that he/she could have their parents help them with a report on their topic but that they had to write the paper in their own handwriting. I am only asking for a one page report. If all you can find is one paragraph on your topic that would be fine. The report will be due on Tuesday, Januiary 20, 2009. If you find a picture to go along with your report staple it to the
report.
We are also starting to prepare for First Holy Communion. We will be learning about the different parts of the Mass. I encourage your family to attend Mass on a regular basis. The flu season is upon us. Make sure that your child gets plenty of rest and wears a sweatshirt or jacket on these cold days.

Mark your calendar. On Monday, November 17, 2008, 7:00 p.m. at St. Patrick's Church there will be a meeting for parents of children who will be receiving their First Penance. Fr. We have been talking in class about making the right choices. We are currently going over the Ten Commandments.

I was talking to Mrs. Blackburn the other day and she gave me some important dates to pass on to you. Mark your calendar for Tuesday, December 2, 2008. Your child will be celebrating his/her First Penance at St.Patrick's Church at 7:00 p.m. First Communion is on Saturday, April 25, 2009. On that following Monday, April 27, 2009 we will be celebrating your child's First Communion Mass at OLM School. First Communion is an important part in your child's life that it is always nice to celebrate this event with their school family. I will send Reminder Notes as the dates get closer.
The children got through the ITBS testing with no tears. They also learned to dance to YMCA. We took breaks in between tests and did some dancing. I think they enjoyed dancing to YM CA. Dear Parents,
On September 29, 2008 through October 3, 2008 your child will be taking the ITBS Test. I know some of the children all involved in extra curricular activities that keep them out in the evening. Please make sure that your child gets plenty of rest. Especially during ITBS testing week. Some of the tests last 15 to 20 minutes at a time. So that means your child has to seat at his/her desk for 20 minutes. We stretch and excercise after each test just to keep the blood circulating. As Mrs. Blackburn stated in her Newsletter please make sure that your child is at school everyday and on time. Please stress to your child that this is not at test to see how smart your child is but an evaluation to help the teachers determine the strengths of the students and a way for the teachers to evaluate the curriculum for the school.

I read an article on Reading Aloud to your child. I thought it was interesting so I want to pass it on to you. Reading aloud to your child makes for a wonderful parent-child sharing time, and will help your child to love books and to become a better reader. The article had some tips:
1. sit with your child in a comfortable place, 2. talk about the book and the illustrations, 3. encourage your child to ask questions and make comments before and after the story is read, 4. talk about the characters in the story, 5. predict story events, 6. point to words some of the time when reading, 7. enjoy the story together. All of these things need not be accomplished each time a story is read. These are some tips to help create a meaningful read-aloud memory. Do not treat the read-aloud experience as a teaching situation but as a casual, comfortable parent-child time together. HAPPY READING!

It was so good to see so many of you at Open House on Sunday. I know your child enjoyed you coming into his/her classroom. I hope you enjoyed yourself.
During Social Studies your childd has been studying about ancestors, familes and traditions. to illlusrate the importance of families we will create a visual of your unique "Family Tree". In the next few days your child will be home some papers titled, Getting to Know You, Baptism and a Family Tree information paper. The Getting to Know You paper have questions that Grandparents should answer. If your child has been Baptized fill in the Baptism information. Lastly the Family Tree paper, please fill in the information regarding your family. Once all the papers are returned they will be put into a book and returned to you. Your child has been busy in the classroom answering questions regarding families and traditions. This is a wonderful keepsake of Second Grade. I will send a note home when the "Family Tree" papers go home.
International Night is January 26, 2009. The country I have chosen for this year is Morocco. We will learn as much as we can about Morocco. The people, animals, houses, location , music and of course the food.

We are beginning our third week of school. The children are adjusting to the Grade 2 routine and using the Daily Planner. We start going to the library on Monday, August 25 to check out books. Computer classes also start the week of August 25. The children seem to be doing okay with the homework assignments. Everything has been returned. Please check your child's work. This will give you an opportunity to know what they are working on in the classsroom.
I do not post assignments on the Blog. If your child is absent from school all the work for that day will be on their desk. The work can be taken home when your child returns to school or a sibling, friend or parent can pick it up and take it home on the day the child is absent. Dear Parents,
Today, March 10, 2008 each student was assigned a year during the decade of the 70's. Each student needs to write a one page report on smething that happened or interest them during that year. We talked about it today in class. Some suggestions are: politics, world events, music fads(clothes, toys, etc.), movies, television shows, popular cars, sports, inventions. I suggested to the students that they need to choose one thing and hand write a one page report. I also suggested that they can use the internet, Encyclopedias, public library or interview someone who remembers what they were doing during the 70's. The report is due on March 18, 2008. Parents, This Thursday, February 28,2008 is half a day of school. On Friday, February 29, 2008 there is no school. Teachers will be attending the Los Angeles Religious Education Congress. Have a wonderful weekend.
On Wednesday February 27, 2008 the Second Graders will be participating in the Penance Services here at school. We have been talking about the preparations for Penance.
First Communion is approacing fast. It will be on Saturday April 12, 2008, 9:00 a.m. at St. Patrick's Church.

Dear Parents, Happy New Year! I saw some of you at the Family Fifties Night. Everyone looked like they were having a good time. I sure did! Your children are well on their way learning cursive. A little slow right now, but they're getting the hang of it. Next week is Catholic Schools Week. Lots of activities are planned. Tuesday, January 29 is Buddy Day. Remember to only spend $2.00 on a gift for your child's buddy. Blue and White free dress for Buddy Day.
Cherish lunch at the school on Wednesday, January 30. Senior citizens and residents from different retirement homes have been invited. Thursday, January 31, Decades Day. Friday, February 1, Mass at St. Patrick's 8:15. If you can drive students back to school I would greatly appreciate it. Friday afternoon is the big volleyball game between the 8th Grade vs Teachers.

Family posters are due on Friday, January 25. If they can not be turned in on Friday then Monday would be good. I talked to your children about the family poster on Wednesday, January 23.

The decade that Second Grade is learning and will be learning about is the 1970s. Any bit of information regarding the 70's would be nice. How did you feel during the 70's? What were you doing during this decade? Whatever you can come up with would be appreciated.

Thank you parents for making your child's First Penance so special. As Fr. Pat said, it is you who are the primary educators of your child. It was so nice to see parents, siblings and grandparents there. The children did such a wonderful job.

Parents,
Mark your calendar, on November 13, 2007, Father Pat will be talking to the parents of children who will be receiving their First Penance. We will meet at St. Patrick's Church at 7:00 p.m. Father Pat always does a wonderful job making parents and teachers feel very special.
We will start working on our songs for the Thanksgiving program which is on November 14,2007. Children should be at St. Patricks's Hall by 6:15 p.m. The show starts at 6:30p.m. It always turns out to be a good evening. Where else can you be entertained and get a good meal for a reasonable price.
Your child will be participating in the Operation Christmas Child. Operation Christmas Child is a program where our class will be filling up a shoe box with small toys, hygiene items, school supplies, and hard candy to be shipped to a child whether in the slums of Calcutta or orphans in Johannesburg. I would like to fill a shoe box for one girl and one boy in the age range of 5-9. I will send a letter home with some gift ideas.

Grading

There has been some confusion about the work packets that the students bring home on Fridays. The grade on the Practice Book pages is not the grade for the whole packet of work. The grade is only for the Practice Book pages, which is part of the Reading grade. I hope this clears up some of the confusion regarding the grades on the work that your child brings home on Fridays.
I want to thank those parents who drove to Park Merced for our Prayer Service. The children were very good. We sang all through the day. We had music that afternoon and then we went to Mission Gardens and sang a few songs and performed the Chicken Dance, and Head,Shoulders, Knees and Toes.

Welcome to Second Grade. I am looking forward to working with you this year. Second Grade is an important year. We will celebrate Penance and First Holy Communion.
